Wednesday, 24 August
Hi all! Where have the last 3 weeks gone? It only seems like yesterday that I was penning the previous note. Generally the wether has been fantastic and kind to campers. The hottest day on record never materialised but it has been plenty hot enough most days.
Carnival Week was a resounding success with the highlight for many being the Harrier "jump jet" display durng the afternoon - how does it do that hovering bit?? The Procession was great and took about an hour and a half to pass - so much effort goes into the floats and pedestrian entries. Just over the hill at Teignmouth was the World Fireball sailing championships with competitors from all over the globe - some 175 "2 man" yachts quite a sight to see. They made a spectacle just being parked on the "prom". We welcomed some French sailing families for the fortnight "Merci pour restant avec nous" (or something like that...).
Bert has had great fun on the ocassional visits to the campsite catching up with old friends and making some new ones. If he has "missed anyone" this summer he apologises but he has been busy "rockpooling" and entertaning "Bluebell" my sister's 4 month old golden retriever recently and hasn't had so much time to stay at Leadstone!
We have been busy all month and welcomed many "old customers" - great to see you all, and thank you very much for the cards and gifts you have left us at Reception - they are much appreciated. (Sarah and I think the "cuddly frogs" are great Debbie, thanks! August Bank Holiday is approaching fast - if you haven't booked you may well be out of luck but give us a try - you never know!
That's it for now - wherever you "pitch up" this weekend have a great time!
Thursday, 4 August
Hi all! What a couple of weeks - miserable English summer last week but much better this week, thankfully. It was warm and we did have an hour or two of sun last week but not really beach weather.
Looking on the bright side - the grass has greened up..... Forecast looks great for the rest of the month with the "hottest day in memory" being sounded for Monday 8th - fingers crossed! I have just seen the Carnival Programme for week beginning 13 August and it is fantastic (again). The Airshow is on Thursday afternoon followed by the Grand Procession at 7pm. Don't forget the helicopters will be based at the Warren "green" during the day.
We are not taking any bookings now until around 20th August so if you still haven't booked please phone the office (01626 864411 ; 8.30am - 7pmish) to see if we can help. Its a dog's life - Bertie has been on Reception, reserving pitches, and playing host to all his old friends again! So many folk ask after him - it is amazing. If you have stayed and missed one of his personal appearances, he is sorry but he has a lot of sleeping to catch up on during the afternoons!
On Monday evening we walked up to the "Turf Pub" on the Exe - directions on Bertie's page. It was a lovely evening with the sun going down - it really rates as one of my favourites, the steak was superb and Kate's home made fish cakes were great.
Looking to the end of the month and Bank Holiday Monday it is the "Lustleigh Show", a proper old fashioned village show with pony gymkhana, old fashioned "stalls" and fun dog show/races. A great day out with beer tent on the moor - make it a date.
That's it for now folks - see you soon.
Friday 22 July
In 30 plus years we have never been booked up so far in advance! The next date we can take any bookings for is Friday 19th August. The weather has just been fantastic this summer and that I am sure is the catalyst for the number of bookings received to date.
Important news if you are a Concert fan - the promoter for the Jools Holland and McFly gigs at Powderham has gone into administration and the concerts have been cancelled - if you bought tickets I suggest you contact the vendor to see about a refund. Dawlish Carnival now has its own website at www.dawlishcarnival.co.uk - packed with news on the big week. There will be at least 3 helicopters landing at Dawlish Warren for the day (Thurs 18th) - it was a great display last summer. Highlight of the airshow on the Thursday is of course the Red Arrows.
Teignmouth has its Carnival procession this coming Friday (29 July) from 7 pm - there are other events on from Wednesady 26, so pop over and have a look.
Bertie has been meeting and greeting some of his fans this last week - in particular Eddie (springer) and William (labrador). He also met some young 'uns last Sunday who have named their hamster "Bertie"!! Bert says "Thanks for the treats!!"
Another great summer's evening with the sea in the distance.
We are really busy this weekend so I probably won't post here for a week or so.
Monday, 11 July
I was a little presumptious with the weather statement last time!! Of course the 24th June was Glastonbury and everyone got wet - still warm though... Within 30mins of the rain stopping on that Friday morning you would never have known it had rained.
This last week has been great weather - don't forget to click the "Weather" link at the top of the page for an (accurate - well it has been so far this week..) up to date 5 day forecast. We actually print this off and put it in Reception most days. The vehicle gathering at Powderham was superb yesterday - I managed to get over there for a coule of hours. From old steam engines right up to the most modern Aston Martin DB9. Over 1000 vehicles and 76 different car clubs attending. I hear on the grapevine that the Paul Weller concert and Jools Holland evening, also at Powderham later this month, may be cancelled - so check before parting with any money! We have had in the "Motorcaravanner's Club" this weekend - great to see you all again and look forward to seeing you next time. We had all shapes and sizes from £200 perfectly functional vans to £50,000+ luxury "homes" with sky dish and all! I have been going through the arrivals folders for the coming weeks - great to see so many "old" names on the lists. Can't wait to see you all again - We'll save you some sunshine!
Looking ahead we are getting busy and cannot take any more bookings for week commencing 30 July. You can make a booking for Friday 5 August (minimum 3 nights) onwards. If you want electric hook up for anytime during July 23 - Aug 20 please telephone between 8.30am - 6.30pm as we may have a cancellation or a few odd days you could have. Wherever you end up camping this summer have a great time and come and see us next year if you have been unable to get in this year. For golfers - with and without a handicap certificate - amongst you I will be putting together a page on golf courses in the autumn - so watch this space!
Back into the heat 30c.....
Thursday, 23rd June
As I write this on Thursday afternoon (23rd June) I can see one or two fluffy clouds - the first we've seen for a week. Temperature is in the 80s (old money) with hotter weather forecast for Friday! Dad has always maintained the "Warren" was in a micro climate, maybe I should rephrase it as a microwave - it is piping hot from dawn til dusk.
Bertie, Kate and I have been to the beach today - halfway between Dawlish and Teignmouth at Holcombe. Only 4 other souls on the 1.5 mile stretch of beach - we spent nearly 3 hours in the sea, who needs the Med?
Back on site we welcomed numerous regulars for opening weekend last Friday and in particular the Bristol "posse" - great to see you all again. Surely, camping cannot get any better than it is now with such marvellous conditions. Not been camping before? I see Halfords (and others too I expect), are doing a deal on a 2 man dome tent, sleeping bags, etc for under £50! Come for a few days and you'll want to stay the week.
Were you able to see the moon rise last night? It was the most amazing natural phenomenon I've seen in many years, it was glowing orange and it seemed as though it was just over our hedge - it was huge and spectacular.
Looking ahead - this weekend Teignmouth has a folk festival from 24 - 26th June and the following week the Bishopsteignton PTA hold there annual Steam Rally and country fair day between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot. There is a fun dog show - will Bert win the most handsome dog...? Dawlish Town now has a Farmer's Market every other Friday, (If you miss Dawlish the "in between" week the market is in Teignmouth.) - the next Dawlish market is 1 July. We have had sausages, pies, bacon, cheese and more from them - it is all really scrumptious especially the bangers! Get the barbie on...
I'll leave you with that thought and just remind you that Leadstone offers all a warm (scorching hot) welcome - we'd love to see you this summer.
Andrew and Bertie
PS. Bert says "don't forget to look at his page for the 4 great walks!!"
Monday 23rd May
Electric hookups are going well this year - in fact we don't have any left for the week beginning Saturday July 30 for 7 nights.
If you are thinking about camping with us and do need electric hookup - don't leave it too late for the rest of the summer!
Bertie has been busy today... cutting grass!
Wednesday 12th May 2005
We have just updated the "What's On?" page - loads music at Powderham Castle and more great events in and around Dawlish Warren this summer!
The site is beginning to take shape and it will soon be 17 June. Come and see us when we are open - a weekend away will make all the difference!
Monday 8th November 2004
Web site updated with 2005 tariff and one or two more pictures!
The camping fields are almost fully recovered and Bertie has been keeping the rabbits fit! (or is it the other way round...)
If I don't get round to adding to this page before Christmas have a great time over the festive season and we wish you all a Happy New Year. Don't forget to get your booking in as soon as you can - especially if you need an electric hook up.
Oh, by the way, Dawlish Carnival week is from 13 to 20th August and Bank Holiday Monday is August 29th.
